Week 2, Day 6

Filed under: Uncategorized — akstracy @ 1:20 am

I didn’t write yesterday, obviously, because I didn’t do anything!  Well, I did Jillian Michaels.  I woke up late and didn’t have time to do anything in the morning and ended up babysitting until 1 AM so I took JM with me and did it at their house.  However, the planned 3 miles didn’t happen.

So, today, normally a no run day, turned into a 3 mile day.  But, it wasn’t even really a 3 mile day.  I decided to do it on the treadmill again because I was in the mood to run in the afternoon and Florida is still 80 degrees the day before Halloween.  I made it 2 miles but had to start walking because my ankles were hurting.  I walked the half mile after that and then decided to do my arm work out.  I did moves similar to JM but with heavier weights.  I also did the arm rotation with 4 machines and 6 reps on each machine for 4 rounds.  Then I went back and walked another 1.2 miles at a 10% incline on the treadmill.  I planned to do my P90X abs tonight, but didn’t get around to it.  That needs to stop!

As far as rules go today, I had no fast food, I had some starbursts, I didn’t eat after 9pm, I didn’t eat in my bedroom, I had 2 diet sodas today, and I probably drank about 60 oz of water.  I’d say I followed 3 and a half of the 6 rules.  Thats more than 50%!

I plan to not sleep til noon tomorrow so that I can get up and start being productive right away and get these workouts done! 🙂  The goal is 5 miles.  I plan to run outside for the next week because the treadmill is killing my ankles.  It has always hurt my joints a little more so we’ll see if outside helps.

Happy Halloween! 🙂

Week 2, Day 4

Filed under: Uncategorized — akstracy @ 12:46 am

I don’t have a lot of time to write tonight and my internet is not cooperating very well so this will be short.

Today was another long day.  I did not get enough sleep last night, but still managed to get up at 6:40 and fit in JM before babysitting.  I took the kids on a walk to the duck pond which was about a 15-20 minute walk each way.  I was sweating profusely by the time we got home after pushing a stroller with 2 kids in the middle of the day!  Despite my resistance, Angela made me go to the gym at 10pm after all of my daily activities were over.  The goal was to run 4 miles today…going into it, I decided to cut it back to 3.  However, I pushed through and ran 4 miles in about 39 minutes..a very slow 4 miles on a treadmill.  I also walked half a mile afterward to cool off.  Today was also a core day.  I have been pretty sore all week so I did 60 ab exercises and was done for the evening.

As for the rules, the only one I’ve held to is no fast food.  I had a dinner for school tonight that put my eating healthy out the door.  I tried to control myself with portions but it was all so good.  I have probably gotten close to 90 oz of water today, but it has all been in the last 4 hours.  And…because I’m a stress eater and I’ve been sitting at my desk for almost 2 hours trying to figure out problems that I am overly confused on, I have eaten after 9 and in my bedroom.  Ugh.

Not a good day for rules, but I am proud that I fulfilled my exercises for the day.  Thank you motivator Angela!

Time to put today behind me and try harder tomorrow!

Caught a bug…and not a running bug!

Week 2, Day 3.

I was supposed to wake up at 7 am and do JM and go run 3 miles before class.  I woke up with a pounding headache and a runny nose and decided medicine and 90 more min of sleep was more important to me.

I did, however, come home from class at 4 and did the whole JM workout.  I went to the gym and walked a quarter of a mile, ran 3 miles, walked a half mile with an incline, and a quarter of a mile without one.  I also did a new weight rotation at the gym where I did 4 sets of 6 reps on 4 different machines with a larger weight than I would probably normally use, but not a max weight by any means.  I did 1 set on every machine before starting over at the beginning.  I felt like it was a good work out.  I felt like yesterday’s arm workout was a good one and I’m definitely sore today, so hopefully I’ll say the same thing tomorrow.  Although I am pretty sore all over and getting tired of being sore so I’m hoping this gets a little easier as my body eases into the new routine.  Not to mention I still wasn’t feeling great when I did all of this so my run was way slower than normal.  I was on the treadmill (because it was storming outside) and the total time at the end was 43 minutes for 4 miles with one of them being walked.  I guess that isn’t horrible, but not my best.

As for the rules:

1.  I didn’t eat fast food.

2.  I had a rice krispee treat at lunch b/c one of my friends made them from scratch and I had to taste test!  It was small and I avoided it for a few hours….but couldn’t do it anymore!

3.  I had yogurt at around 9:30 while watching my shows.  😦  I’ll get it back to 9 one day!

4.  No eating in the bedroom today!  It helped that I wasn’t in my bedroom much today!

5.  I had a diet pepsi when I got home from class to get rid of my headache…but only one! 🙂

6.  I only drank about 30 oz of water by 4:30 pm so I had a long way to go!  I think I succeeded though because I just kept filling up my cup and drinking with a straw!  Straws make me drink so much more!

Overall, I feel like it was a successful day for not feeling 100%.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a 4 mile run.  However, I have a pretty busy day tomorrow so it might have to be a treadmill run again at night which will be hard for me because I hate the treadmill!

Oh and how could I forget the biggest news of all today….I REGISTERED FOR THE 5 POINTS OF LIFE HALF MARATHON! It is official…no turning back now.  I’m hoping that will give me some motivation to push through the soreness because I already paid!

Ok, going to try to get about 6 hours of sleep.  Goodnight!

Week 2, Day 2

Filed under: Uncategorized — akstracy @ 3:02 am

Yay for a successful day!  I forced myself to get up at 6:30 this morning and do the JM Shred.  I didn’t have weights so I used green bean cans which probably didn’t do a whole lot for me as far as resistance, but at least it was something.  I made it through the workout without pausing at all! 🙂  Horray!  That might be because I went from 5 lb weights to green beans…but oh well! 🙂  I bought 3 lb weights today so I’ll be really working starting tomorrow.  I’m hoping by December 1st I can do 5 real push ups…maybe?  I actually don’t know how many I can do right now, but it isn’t many.

After babysitting and class I went to our gym and did a round of lifting mixed with abs.  I hurt pretty bad by the time I was done so hopefully it did something.  Today was a no run day but I did get on a bike for 11 minutes at a moderate resistance just to get some type of cardio since I skipped out yesterday.

As far as the rules go…

1. No fast food–check.

2.  Limit sweets–I had some lemon drops in the car…but I counted them out to 1 serving! 🙂

3.  No eating after 9pm–so at 8:50 I was hungry and realized I had only had about 1100 calories for the day so I cut an apple and put some peanut butter on it.  I finished around 9:20 and that was the last thing I had.  I will have a cup of milk before bed.  Overall, I think my eating was good today!

4.  No eating in bedroom–Success.  No junk food eating tonight!

5.  No soda today!

6.  90 oz water…I lost count but I drank at least 80 that I counted through my water bottle.  I had some cups of water at home in addition to it though.  Yay!!

Tomorrow is more JM and a 3 mile run! 🙂  My legs are still pretty sore and I started getting a cold today so hopefully it goes well!

Week 2–Day 1

Filed under: Uncategorized — akstracy @ 4:32 am

Not a good start to week 2.  As much as I enjoyed a week of not reading textbooks, I’m excited to get back into a routine with my life.  Although, being out of my apartment should be no excuse for not following my training plans.  I got up this morning and did the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred Level 1 Video.  It is a 20 minute workout that combines strength, cardio, and abs.  It was pretty hard…and I used 5 lb weights which was an idiot move…but that was all I had.  My legs were really sore from yesterday so I had to skip out on some of the squats thinking I would do some more leg work later with some cycling.

I didn’t get back to Gainesville tonight until late and still have not seen the gym.  Shame on me.  Therefore, JM is all I’ve done for crosstraining today.  Not horrible, but not what I wanted.  It is time to get serious this week with the total package.  I’ve set up some rules and plan to report on them every day.

Here they are:

1.  No fast food —a bad habit when my schedule gets busy and it is right there on campus.

2. Limit sweets–I am trying to eliminate them totally, but don’t want to punish myself if I have maybe one a week.

3.  No eating after 9 pm.  This will be my hardest adjustment and may take a while to get it from 10pm to 9pm because when school is in session, I can be stuck in meetings until very late!

4.  No eating in my bedroom.  I read on a few blogs about eating habits and how to create no eating zones.  My bedroom is a bad place to have food because it usually is not healthy food that I snack on while doing work/studying.  It is easy to not pay attention to how much I am eating and becomes trouble.  This is usually taking place after 9pm too…so not good in multiple ways.  With only water allowed in my bedroom, I think I will eliminate a ton of unnecessary calories!

5.  1 diet soda/day.  I would rather not drink soda at all.  I’d like to get away from caffeine.  I used to hardly have it, but have gotten to the point that I drink a few a day out of habit.  Caffeine dehydrates–not what I need.  This may take a while to wean myself off of, but will be so worth it (and may save me a few bucks!)  in the end!  The good part is, I’m not a huge fan of regular soda so at least it isn’t calories in my body!

6.  90 oz water/day.  Yes, that is a lot…but I think its doable.  This may be hard to track because I like to drink from straws with my cups at home so I can drink a lot, but should probably figure out how much goes in each cup.  I have a water bottle that I take to class and will hopefully drink one bottle in each class.  If I’m only drinking one soda a day, the rest should be water…so hopefully it’ll be a lot! 🙂

That is it for the rules…for now.  I’d really like to make these lifestyle changes.  I wanted to make a sleeping rule…but realistically, that won’t be a lifestyle change.  I am convinced it is nearly impossible to be in college and have a steady sleep schedule.  Ideally, I’d like to be in bed by 12:30 every night…but as you can see tonight, that is not always going to happen.

Tomorrow begins new classes…and is a no run day!  I’ll begin my day with JM and hopefully end it at the gym with some cycling and an arm workout! 🙂  Happy Birthday Angela! 🙂

First Long Run

Filed under: Uncategorized — akstracy @ 4:46 am

Today is Saturday, Week 1, Day 7.  That means it was the long run day.   It was definitely a looonngg run.

Yesterday was a no run day and was supposed to be an arm workout.  I have been at my parents home so I don’t have a gym and I’m out of my normal routine so I just did some push ups for my arms yesterday.  Lame, I know.  I’ll get better!

After having yesterday off, I assumed today would be great.  My first long run was supposed to be 5 miles.  I just ran a 10K a few weeks ago so 5 miles shouldn’t have been a problem.  Think again.  It was my hardest run, by far.  I went to the beach again.  It is the safest place to run around here…or so I think.  I mapped it out and planned to lay out at the beach for about an hour and then get dressed and go.  However, I got to the beach and realized I forgot my towel, so laying out was not much of an option.  I got dressed and started stretching.  In the midst of stretching, some creepers in a hotel were yelling at me so I decided to put my headphones on and go.

It was a beautiful day and it was around 4pm so it wasn’t the coolest time, but there was a breeze from the ocean and the heat wasn’t a problem at all.  I decided not to time this run and just enjoy the scenery, but I knew where my mile markers were and I have a bad habit of keeping track of songs in my head so I knew it was a slow run based on the amount of songs I would hear for every mile.  The first mile and a half were rough.  I was very very tight.  That is usually my hardest part of every run, but today was tighter than normal.  At around 2 miles, my right arm and up my neck was cramping.  I need to learn ways to loosen up my upper body while running, but I also had my ipod attached to my right arm so I thought that might have been part of the reason.  I was hurting pretty bad around this time and decided to walk for a few minutes.  I also switched my ipod over to my left arm to see if it made a difference.  I walked for an entire song and tried to loosen up my shoulders.  After that, I was pretty good to finish the last .5 of that mile and to turn around to head back to the start.  I didn’t stop any more on the way back but I started to tighten up again a few songs later but just pushed myself to the finish and walked for about 2 songs after I got back to the start and spent about 10 minutes stretching before I drove home.

Shew…that was a long description of a run.  All in all, it was not enjoyable.  I struggled for the majority of the time and if I hadn’t been training, I probably would have turned around and walked back after 2 miles.  Yay for February 14 as motivation!!

Tomorrow is a crosstraining day…I’m thinking it will be a cycling day—low impact on the joints!!  (Yikes, I’m getting old)  My right ankle is pretty sore tonight.  My body isn’t used to this much work.  I am so so so thankful I’ve decided to do just the half.  I would be pretty discouraged right now if I was trying to follow the original schedule for the full.

Speaking of schedule, I need to adjust mine and post it.  I also got the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred today.  (Thanks to Angela)  It is a 20 minute workout that I’m hoping to do at least 3 mornings a week.

I’ve also been reading a lot of other blogs this week and will be stealing some guidelines that people have used to keep myself in check.  I’m learning more and more that training for a race is not just about running but the total package–food, drink, sleep, and exercise!

I’m going to start that now by going to sleep so I can get 8 hours tonight before church in the morning! 🙂

Cool Weather! :)

Filed under: Uncategorized — akstracy @ 1:25 am

It is nearing the end of October and finally getting cool in Florida!  Thank God for the nice breezes on my first week of training! 🙂

I didn’t blog yesterday, but I did run.  My internet is not always very cooperative and I ended up giving up on it last night.  Anyway, for Week 1, Day 4 my goal was 4 miles.  I ran my typical old 4 mile run which is a straight line 2 miles and then turn around.  It goes through campus so sometimes I have to stop for lights, but I actually only hit 2 lights on the whole run!  Not bad.  I timed it by approximation because I can’t find my watch and didn’t want to carry my phone.  I left my kitchen at 6:55 and returned at 7:36.  Figuring in my stretching and warm up/cool down time, it probably took me about 35ish minutes to run…maybe 36.  It was a nice cool night and wasn’t too bad of a run.  🙂

Today, Week 1, Day 5, I was supposed to run 3 miles.   I got busy earlier today and was planning to run them in my friend’s neighborhood.  He wasn’t home, so I just parked and went running anyway.  I had to pee before I started, but decided to go anyway thinking it might go away….not the case!  By the 2 mile mark, I was feeling like I was going to explode!  Needless to say, I made it about 2 and a half miles and had to stop.   I couldn’t bear the extra half mile loop.  So, I drove home and did my P90X Ab DVD.  I had to take breaks in the middle of some of the sets, but completed each exercise with at least 20 reps.

Overall, it was a good 2 days.  Next week I really need to start adding in more weight training.  I have officially decided I am only running the half marathon in February because of my fear of injury.  I would rather have more time to get into the daily running routine and then build miles rather than try to train quickly and injure myself.  Also, I’ll have the ability to do more weight training and hopefully tone up and lose some weight while I’m at it!

Tomorrow I head back to the beach for the weekend so I’ll be running over there for 2 days.  Tomorrow is a no run day though so I’ll just be doing other exercises.

Goodnight world! 🙂

A day at the beach…

Filed under: Uncategorized — akstracy @ 3:18 am

Today is Week 1, Day 3.  Yesterday was my day of rest and even though I just began, I decided to honor it because I have 3 straight days of running now.

Newest update is the debate between a whole or half marathon.  Reading about a lot of injuries has made me slightly apprehensive about the idea of a whole marathon.  In order to get the cheapest registration fee, I need to decide by November 1.   That is not a lot of time.  Yikes.

Today, I was in Daytona for a dentist appointment so I decided to do my run on the beach.  I guestimated the distance and did pretty well.  I ran 3.2 miles.  It was a beautiful day to run, but the beach is always a little windier than the mainland, which I didn’t think about.  I also didn’t have any music!  The ocean is a great sound…but definitely gets boring on a 3 mile run.  The run down the beach wasn’t bad but coming back was rough.  The wind was blowing in my face and I was getting really bored because I had already seen everything on the way back!  I finished in about 29 minutes.  I was walking back to my car and realized I forgot to stop the stop watch and it was at 29:41 so it took me a little less time than that.  Not horrible, but not the best.  Lots of room for improvement! 🙂

Hello Running World!

Filed under: Uncategorized — akstracy @ 1:50 am

Yay!  I have finally entered the blogging world!

I began a new challenge today–training for a marathon!  Yikes!  I’ve been a recreational runner since I began college (3 years ago) but have never really kept track of pace or distance.  My main goal was to stay somewhat in shape and relieve some stress!  Recently, I ran a 5K and a 10K for fun!  I really enjoyed the race day atmosphere, even though I wasn’t really “racing.”  I just wanted to finish and get a free tshirt!  🙂  Recently, a friend wanted to train for a half marathon in December, but logistics do not seem to be working out for the race.  This past week, I was introduced to the 5 Points of Life Marathon in Gainesville in February.  I won’t have to worry about logistics…and I have a few more months to train for it!  So, in my delusional state that studying for finals put me in, I agreed to run the race.  Go big or go home, right?

My problem for training for the half was motivation.  I made a training plan and taped it on my wall by my light switch so I saw it every time I turned on the light or closed my door.  I felt a little guilty when I didn’t run, but I was the only one that knew that the day wasn’t highlighted green and would soon be X’ed in red.  So, I’ve attempted a blog.  It will help me keep track of where I have been and where I am going–and will hopefully also give me a little motivation to train when I don’t want to because someone might be waiting to hear about my workout of of the day!   I am not looking to finish this thing in a certain time or in a certain place—I just want to finish! 🙂

So, here we go.  I am exactly 17 weeks away from race day.  February 14, 2010.  I have combined a few training plans (between 16 and 18 weeks)  to create my plan that works with my schedule.  Hopefully I will be able to post it when I finally get it all put on the computer!

For now, I basically plan to use Sunday as a cross training day, Monday is rest, Tuesday and Thursday are lower mileage, Wednesday is medium mileage, Friday is rest, and Saturday is  a long run!  Tuesday and Thursday may be used for crosstraining/rest depending on how the longer runs are going.  I’ve been trying to read a lot on training, but still have a long way to go–so any tips would be greatly appreciated!  I really have no clue what I’m doing, but it will be a learning experience.

For week 1, day 1, I followed the schedule for Crosstraining.  I walked on the treadmill at 3.5 speed and 5% incline for 10 minutes, increased to 3.8 speed and 10% incline for 10 minutes, increased into a slow jog at 6.0 speed and 10% incline for 5 minutes, decreased to 3.8 speed and 6% incline for 10 minutes, and then walked 3.5 speed at 2% incline for 10 minutes.  I was reading while doing all of the walking, which kept my mind off of the boredom of a gym.  I usually don’t do well on treadmills, so a book while walking helped.  I then got on a bike and cycled for 20 minutes, increasing the resistance for 2 minute intervals.  It is hard to judge the resistance and speed on a cycling bike because of the knob–so I just kind of had to guess.

Overall, it was an easy work out.  I wasn’t able to go to the big gym so I had to make use of the little one at the apartment for the day.

That is all for Day 1!  Horray!
